High prices may prompt Bangladesh to allow layer chicken imports
The Bangladesh government may import layer chicken if its price does not drop in a week, Commerce Minister Faruk Khan warned the poultry farm owners Wednesday (September 2).
He however said fresh import of chicken eggs will not be allowed if the price is stabilised in the market.
The warning of commerce minister came at a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association in his office.
Import of eggs from India drew sharp criticism from the domestic poultry farm owners who said Indian poultry products might be dangerous as farms there had not yet been cleared from the risk of bird flu.
The minister however assured of policy support to develop the domestic poultry industry.
As price of eggs was going up to the discontent of consumers, the government has recently allowed import of 200 million eggs from India in a bid to stabilize the price.
