US poultry slaughterhouse allowed to continue operations in California
A US federal court has approved an agreement, between Chinese American Live (CAL) Poultry Vikon Inc. and the city of Rosemead, California, US, which will permit the former to continue its poultry slaughterhouse operations in the town.
The settlement will allow CAL Poultry to stay put as long as the company makes improvements to address residents' concerns with odours, resulting from poultry production, while the city can prohibit future slaughterhouses from locating in Rosemead.
Federal judge Dolly Gee's approval settles a suit CAL Poultry filed against Rosemead claiming religious and cultural discrimination after the city tried to evict the company for what it said were zoning reasons.
