Argentina July corn exports plunge; wheat also down
                            


Argentina exported 792,393 tonnes of corn in July, down sharply from 3,388,676 tonnes shipped a year earlier, according to the latest data from the animal health and sanitation service Senasa.

 

July's corn shipments were valued at US$133 million, compared to US$754 million a year earlier.

 

Corn exports during the first seven months of the year totalled 6,173,950 tonnes, down from 11,282,803 tonnes a year earlier.

 

The 2008-09 crop was battered by drought, sharply cutting production.

 

Iran, Colombia, Malaysia, Algeria and Egypt were the leading destinations for Argentine corn exports during the period.

 

Argentina exported 66,463 tonnes of wheat in July, down from 85,260 tonnes shipped a year earlier, according to Senasa.

 

July wheat exports were valued at US$14 million, down from US$30 million a year ago.

 

During the first seven months of the year, Brazil dominated the import of Argentine wheat, buying 2.2 million tonnes. Iran and Peru followed with 367,286 and 304,581 tonnes, respectively.

 

July wheat flour shipments totalled 25,077 tonnes, compared to 32,179 tonnes a year earlier.
