Sri Lanka's poultry industry faces threats on insufficient corn
The scarcity of corn in Sri Lanka would cause the collapse of the poultry industry if the government took no immediate precautions, said Dr. D. D. Wanasinghe, chairman of the All-Island Poultry Association.
Sri Lanka's poultry industry needed 200,000 tonnes of corn each year, but corn output was insufficient for consumption, said Wanasinghe.
Sri Lanka was unable to acquire sufficient corn because importation of the grain was illegal, he said.
The government must lift the restriction with immediate effect or Sri Lanka would face a huge crisis in the poultry industry, he said.
Complaints were made to the Ministry of Livestock Development but they did not receive any proper response, he added.
