India's seafood exports rises 19 percent to record levels

 

 

The volume of India's seafood exports during the year 2006-07 rose 19 percent to reach a record-high of US$1.85 billion.

 

The year also marked the first time the country's seafood exports crossed Rs.8,000 crore.

 

Frozen shrimp remained the main seafood export item.

 

The EU continued to be the largest market for India's seafood produce, accounting for a third of exports. This is followed by Japan and the US with 16 percent each.

 

This year, China has become a major buyer through increased seafood purchases.

 

The country now accounts for nearly 14 percent of the value of India's seafood exports.
