Revolutionising Global Food Supply: Sustainable Aquaculture
Aquaculture, according to a United Nations study, "The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture" (2020), is a factor in better food security and nutrition as it drives the amount of seafood available for human consumption.
Aquaculture can also elevate economic development in coastal and rural areas.
But the growth of this food production sector is not without its challenges - and consequences in the form of environmental impacts, In Vietnam, small-scale shrimp farmers expanded ponds beyond limits into forested areas despite being part of stateled schemes that call for maintaining 60% mangrove cover on allocated farmland, researchers found. There are interventions that can help keep aquaculture production sustainable with lesser impact on the environment. Such actions were identified in an article focused on Indonesian aquaculture (pages 4-5).
In this issue of Livestock & Feed Business, Angel Yeast tackles the issue of sustainable aquaculture by highlighting the urgency to cut the amount of fishmeal in aquafeed (pages 8-9). With its yeast-based GroPro Aqua nutritional solution, the company aims to improve the production performance of aquatic animals and lower the use of fishmeal.
With the implementation of measures by government bodies, farmers, and other industry players, aquaculture can expect a more probable future in sustainable food production.
