Olam Agri's strategic investments uplift Nigeria's aquaculture sector

International food and agri-business company Olam Agri's strategic investments and expertise have benefitted Nigeria's aquaculture sector, according to local fish farmers during a recent comprehensive value chain assessment by the firm, BusinessPost reported.
Olatoye Fajimi, vice president of the Lagos State Catfish and Allied Farmers Association, highlighted the deployment of technical experts by Olam Agri to collaborate with farmers, thereby enhancing farm clusters' productivity.
The company imparted crucial knowledge on pond water management, PH level testing, feed waste reduction, and optimal fish-farming conditions. These interventions have positively influenced the businesses of local farmers.
By localising feed production in strategic hubs, the company expedites farmers' access to feed. Technical experts also serve as salespeople, fostering direct interactions with farmers to enhance farm cluster efficiency.
Mr. Ankit Puri, vice president of the Animal Feed and Protein Unit of Olam Agri in Nigeria, said that the company is focused on empowering fish farmers. Comprehensive feed formulation processes, robust procurement systems, logistics optimisation, and operational excellence have been instrumental.
Olam Agri's investment in Nigeria's fish farming value chain aligns with the country's Seeds for The Future (SFTF) initiative. Ashish Pande, country head of Olam Agri in Nigeria, elaborated on SFTF's core elements, including support for farmers, education for youth, empowerment of women, health promotion, and emission reduction.
Commencing its aquaculture value chain investment in 2017, Olam Agri trained local farmers in modern fish farming practices through its global aqua expert, Matthew Tan. Over 40 Olam Agri technical experts further disseminated expertise, benefiting around 7,500 Nigerian fish farmers, including women. The establishment of a state-of-the-art feed mill in Ilorin ensured a consistent supply of high-quality and affordable fish feed.
