Philippine dairy production up 11% in 1st half

Dairy production in the Philippines during the first half increased 11% to 11,700 tonnes from 10,540 tonnes last year, Business Mirror reported, citing a report from the Philippine National Dairy Authority (NDA).

The NDA report, titled "The Performance of the Philippine Dairy Sector," said the first-half dairy production grossed 411.24 million pesos (US$8.033 million) at current prices, or 20.51% higher than the P341.25 million ($6.67 million) in the first half of 2016.

.

On the weighted average, the farm-gate price of dairy reached P35.15 (69 cents) per litre, the report said.

The NDA noted that based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the dairy subsector, among all the livestock subsectors, registered the highest increase, both in terms of volume and value of production in the six months through June.

Overall, the livestock sector's production in the first half reached 1.338 million tonnes, slightly higher than the 1.326 million tonnes posted during the same period last year. Value of the total output rose 10.95% year-on-year to P137.33 billion ($2.7 billion).

The report said that due to sustained demand and higher prices of all the livestock subsectors, hog, the major contributor to the subsector's performance, registered a 1.04% growth in production and a 12.09% gain in earnings.

"Gross production and earnings from carabao sustained an upward trend by 0.33% and 13.78%, respectively. Despite the decrease in production volume for cattle (0.42%) and goat (0.91%), production values grew 2.83% for cattle and 3.44% for goat," it said.
