Kentucky State University secures US$600,000 grant for soybean research

Kentucky State University has been awarded a grant of US$600,000 to support research focused on nitrogen management in soybean production, Brownfield Ag News reported.

Dr Anuj Chiluwal, assistant professor of agronomy and the project's director, said that there is a pressing need to enhance soybean seed protein concentration. This improvement is crucial to bolster the competitiveness of US soybeans in the global feed market.

Presently, many soybean producers face challenges in achieving soybeans with protein content meeting the minimum standards required for high-quality animal feed.

Prior investigations have indicated a potential correlation between low protein concentration and nitrogen levels. This research endeavour aims to explore the optimal levels and timing of late-season nitrogen applications that yield the most favourable results in terms of soybean yields and seed composition.

Titled "Optimising Nitrogen Management in Soybean: Integrating Manual and High Throughput Aerial Phenotyping," the research project has been granted funding for the period spanning from 2023 to 2026.
