Nigeria unveils five-year strategy to ensure aquatic animal health and sustainability

Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has introduced a comprehensive five-year framework designed to protect the health and sustainability of aquatic animals, Leadership reported.

The National Aquatic Animal Health Strategy (NAAHS) for Nigeria (2023 – 2027) initiative targets the prevention, control, and management of diseases affecting aquatic animals. These diseases not only affect trade facilitation but also pose threats to livelihoods, food and nutrition security, ecosystem well-being, and public health.

Encompassing diverse aspects of biosecurity, the NAAHS emphasises disease prevention and control, surveillance and reporting, as well as emergency preparedness and response. This strategy is projected to have a positive impact on thousands of Nigerians who rely on fish farming for their livelihoods. Moreover, it is expected to augment the availability of fish for human consumption.

During the launch of the strategy in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, Dr Ernest Umakhihe, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, highlighted that the implementation of this framework will effectively mitigate the adverse effects of aquatic pathogens. It will also safeguard human health, enhance the resilience of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and foster international trade of aquatic animal species.

Dr Ime Umoh, Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, represented the Permanent Secretary at the event. The Permanent Secretary said that this initiative marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's commitment to preserving the well-being of aquatic ecosystems. The NAAHS also stands as a testament to Nigeria's dedication to promoting the prosperity of the aquatic industry and harnessing its potential for bolstering food and nutritional security.

Dr Columba Vakuru, Nigeria's Chief Veterinary Officer, emphasised the urgency of taking proactive measures to safeguard the health and well-being of aquatic animals.
