Malaysia to wait another month or two before lifting chicken export ban
Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government will hold off on lifting the export ban on chicken for another month or two, Free Malaysia Today reported.
Ismail said that despite the current oversupply of chicken, the extra time was required to guarantee a sufficient domestic supply and a stable price.
He said the government has talked about this in the Cabinet, but since the price of chicken is still subsidised, they cannot decide just yet. He also said they will wait for one or two months, when this subsidy ends on August 31, 2022.
Exports might be permitted if there is a large supply and a low price, but exports will be banned if there is not enough chicken to meet domestic demand, which would raise the price, the Prime Minister said.
Due to a supply shortage that increased the price of chicken, exports of chicken were prohibited as of June 1.
But recently, poultry farmers urged the government to lift the ban due to an excess of chicken.
