China further sells 10,000 tonnes of frozen pork from state reserves

China further auctioned 10,000 tonnes of frozen pork from its state reserves on Friday, Aug. 28, as announced by the China Merchandise Reserve Management Centre on Tuesday.

So far this year, China has sold more than 500,000 tonnes of pork from its reserves to help cool high prices amid a production shortfall, according to a Reuters report.

China's pig herd has been greatly decimated by outbreaks of the African swine fever, which first hit Shenyang, Liaoning province, in August 2018.

Authorities hope that the country's pig herd will return to pre-ASF levels by December, although some observers doubt it.
