Bulgaria completes border fence with Romania

Bulgaria has completed the construction of a wire fence on the border with Romania to prevent migratory animals infected with African swine fever (ASF), according to an official on Tuesday.

"The fence is completed along the 133 kilometres stretch of the border, and is currently being equipped with Bruno's spiral and repellents to reinforce the deterrent effect on migratory animals," Yanko Ivanov, deputy minister of agriculture, food and forestry said.

Worried over the ASF situation in Romania, the fence was over a course of four weeks. Currently, Bulgaria has not registered any case of ASF, Ivanov's press office clarified.

Ivanov added that the disease had hit the biggest pig farm in Romania city, which is only 50 kilometres from the Bulgarian border.

Romania reported 725 outbreaks of ASF in 156 locations in the northwest and southeast of the country on last Wednesday.
