Philippine milk production rises 15% in first half of 2024

The Philippines' National Dairy Authority (NDA) has reported a 15% increase in milk production from January to June, with output reaching 16,020 metric tonnes (MT), compared to 13,940 MT during the same period last year, The Manila Times reported.

This production represents approximately 21% of the total liquid milk supply in the country, equating to one glass out of every five consumed, according to the NDA.

The local milk production sector is supported by a dairy animal inventory of 151,059 heads, including 34,754 dairy cattle, 80,805 dairy carabaos, and 35,500 dairy goats.

The net supply of dairy reached 1.64 million MT, reflecting a 12.7% increase from the previous year's output of 1.46 million MT.

Imports of milk and dairy products grew by 12.9%, totalling 1.65 million MT, up from 1.46 million MT last year. However, the value of these imports declined by 9.2%, from US$40,781.55 million to US$37,011.72 million.

New Zealand was the leading source of dairy imports, contributing 31% of the total import value, followed by the US at 23% and Indonesia at 5%.

On the export side, Philippine dairy exports surged by 27.5%, reaching 26,500 MT, up from 21,030 MT the previous year.

Singapore and the United Arab Emirates were the primary destinations for Philippine dairy exports, accounting for 19% and 13% of the total export value, respectively. Canada followed with 12%, while the US accounted for 11%.
