ASF surveillance beefed up at border of Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada district, India

Surveillance of African swine fever (ASF) has been strengthened in India, this time at the border of Karnataka in Dakshina Kannada district, as a measure to check the spread of the disease from neighbouring Kerala.

Additional checkposts have been set up to keep a close watch on the transportation of pigs and pork from the state, said deputy director of animal husbandry and veterinary services Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty.

He added that checkpoints have been set up at Saradka-Vittal, Talapady and Jalsur, as part of surveillance.

"There is no need for piggery owners and the public to panic, as we have not seen an outbreak of ASF in Dakshina Kannada," Dr. Shetty said.

"Since ASF is a highly contagious viral disease found in pigs, it can spread through direct contact, or otherwise among pigs. However, it is not transmitted to humans. Though there was no outbreak of ASF cases in Dakshina Kannada so far; we have taken precautions in the wake of instances reported in Kerala. Last year, an outbreak of the disease was reported in Kinnigoli, Moodbidri and Neermarga, resulting in the culling of pigs."
