Argentina's poultry industry in trouble

Argentina's poultry industry in the first half registered decreases in slaughterings, exports and per capita consumption.

Slaughterings were down 5.5% to 345 million head from last year's 364 million, eFarmNews reports.

The reports said exports in the first six months also declined, by 16.5%.

Per capita consumption decreased to 42.2 kilogrammes per year.

The fall in poultry production was attributed to the rise in feed prices and higher energy and labor costs.

The report said that several companies have suffered financial crisis including EcoAve, which declared bankruptcy; BRF, which is selling its Rio Carto plant; and Rasic, which used to be the second-largest poultry company in the country.
