Cebu, Philippines assists swine farmers with livestock insurance amid ASF resurgence
The city government of Cebu, Philippines, has aided 79 swine farmers in securing livestock insurance amid the ongoing resurgence of African swine fever (ASF), an official confirmed, Philippine News Agency reported.
Elyn Marie Burlaos, the city agriculturist, explained that the insurance will offer protection to swine farmers against the economic losses associated with ASF.
Farmers may obtain livestock insurance from the City Agriculture Department.
The insurance policies, issued by the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), cover 405 breeding and fattening swine for the 79 participating swine farmers. PCIC provides insurance for a minimum of 20 heads for fattening swine and 10 heads for breeding swine.
Burlaos also mentioned that the insurance policies offer PHP 14,500 (US$257) per head in the event of the death of a breeding swine due to disease or calamity, while fattening swine are covered for PHP 10,000 (US$177) per head.
