Irish livestock slaughterings increase in July; cattle up 14%
Cattle, pig and sheep slaughterings in Ireland all increased in July, according to the Irish Central Statistics Office.
The CSO said the number of cattle slaughtered in July increased 14% to 163,700 from 143,600
in July 2017.
Pig slaughterings increased 8.1% to 292,500 head from 270,600 in July 2017.
Sheep slaughtered in July were up 8.5% at 292,000 head from 269,100 in July last year.
For the seven-month period from January to July, cattle slaughterings were up 3.2% at 1,073,100 head from last year's 1,039,500.
Pig slaughterings in the first seven months rose 4.9% to 2,022,600 head from 1,928,400 in January-July last year.
Sheep slaughterings stepped up by 1.8% to 1,733,500 head in January to November from 1,703,700 in the same period last year.
In volume terms
In terms of carcass weight, Irish beef production in July went up 11.6% to 53,800 tonnes from 48,200 tonnes last year. In the January-July period tonnage rose 1.8% from 345,00 to 351,300 this year.
Pork production in July increased 6.4% to 24,900 tonnes (in carcass weight) from 23,400 tonnes in July 2017. In the first seven months, volume rose 6.3% from 168,700 tonnes last year to 179,300 this year.
Sheep meat production in July was up1.8% to 5,600 tonnes (in carcass weight) from 5,500 in July 2017. In the first seven months, tonnage remained static, as in both years it stood at 36,100.
