US poultry production sees 8% increase in July, driven by higher chicken output

US poultry production in July 2024 exceeded last year's figures, according to data released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Brownfield Ag News reported.

The USDA reports that 4.562 billion pounds of poultry were certified as wholesome in July 2024, representing an 8% increase compared to July 2023. This rise was largely due to a 9% increase in chicken production, which reached 4.119 billion pounds. This gain offset a slight decline in turkey production, which was recorded at 433.538 million pounds.

In terms of slaughter rates and total live weights, the numbers were higher for chickens but saw a decrease for turkeys during the month of July.

Year-to-date, US poultry production has reached 30.569 billion pounds, which is marginally ahead of last year's total. Chicken production has risen by 1%, while turkey production has declined by 6% so far in 2024.
