Norway aquaculture companies spent over US$666 million on farming permits

Norway's major aquaculture permit auction concluded with just under NOK 6 billion (~US$666 million; NOK 1 = US$0.11) spent to acquire licenses to operate fish farms in the country, Fish Information & Services reported.

The amount that the 30 aquaculture companies in Norway paid for permits was a new record, and the new licenses shared among them will allow an additional production of 27,000 tonnes of fish annually.

Nordland country, located north of the country accounted for NOK 2 billion (~US$222 million) of the record total.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry aquaculture permit auction is usually held in the summer but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. New permits for producing salmon, trout and rainbow trout in aquaculture facilities were auctioned.
