African dairy industry to focus on safety
Dairy farmers in Africa have been told to focus on the ensuring the safety and efficiency of dairy operations in order to stay ahead of the game within the competitive industry.
Caroline Edmond, the International Dairy Federation director general said that it is vital for African dairy farmers to be vigilant so that they can deliver more quality milk and produce fewer footprints in the environment.
"We need safe and more sustainable products to feed the growing population," Edmond said, adding that safety in the dairy sector will be the key focus in the African Dairy Conference.
On Monday, she spoke at a Nairobi hotel while briefing the media about 14th edition African Dairy Conference and Exhibition.
According to Dr. Kipkirui Lang'at, chairman of the Eastern and Southern Africa Dairy Association, more than 600 delegates will be attending the conference starting yesterday at the KICC to discuss among other issues in harmonising the standards in the dairy sector in order to facilitate trade.
"Experts in the dairy sector will be sharing strategic insights on how small-scale dairy farmers should ensure they produce quality and safe products that meet the required standards. This will help African farmers remain competitive in the global market," he shared.
Additionally, the conference attendees will include dairy farmers and bring together over 145 companies from 35 countries and more than 30 dairy experts.
Echoing Edmond's sentiments, Lang'at said that food safety will be the central focus of the conference and farmers will get to see various technologies that ensure quality and hygiene.
