Malaysia, Russia discuss technical cooperation in agriculture trade and R&D

Malaysia and the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, explored potential technical cooperation in the field of research and development (R&D), as well as trade in agricultural products, especially meat and dairy, Bernama reported.
This was done through a courtesy call by Rustam Minnikhanov, Rais (President) of the Republic of Tatarstan, with Malaysia's Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
During the meeting, discussions covered the export of meat and dairy products from Russia to Malaysia, along with the ongoing risk assessment process for market access for new agricultural products.
Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) also revealed that the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) has initiated preliminary discussions with the Kazan State Agrarian University (KSAU). The talks aim to explore collaboration in research programmes and capacity building across sectors such as climate change, fertiliser development, vegetable seed breeding and production, and genetic engineering.
Additionally, Minister Mohamad Sabu sought the cooperation of the Republic of Tatarstan in providing details on import needs for products such as bird's nest, frozen food, ready-to-drink, and ready-to-eat goods from Malaysia, with the goal of entering the Tatarstan market.
The statement also noted that, at the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Mohamad expressed his gratitude for the confirmation of participation by the Republic of Tatarstan's Minister of Agriculture and Food, Marat Zyabbarov, and the Tatarstan agricultural delegation in the upcoming Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-Tourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2024. The event is scheduled to take place from September 11 to 22, 2024.
