The trend towards antibiotic reduction - a China perspective (Part II)

Oligosaccharides are relatively small sugar molecules which are not easily digested or absorbed in the animal’s stomach or small intestine. When they enter the later part of the gut, they are utilised by beneficial bacteria at the expense of harmful bacteria as an energy source, promoting their growth. As oligosaccharides provide food to good bacteria, they are analogous to the military rations for an army.

At China Feed Expo 2017, we interviewed a Chinese supplier of isomaltooligosaccharides - Baolingbao Biology - to find out more about the application of such products in the Chinese market.

Apart from isomaltooligosaccharides, the Chinese market also uses fructooligosaccharides, and both types are heat resistant to the range of 120 to 150 degrees Celsius, which meet the upper limit of 110 degrees in feed expansion. In particular, isomaltooligosaccharides target to increase the levels of Bifidobacterium in the gut, while fructooligosaccharides target to increase levels of lactic acid bacteria in general.
