China takes measures to address food safety issues

China released a policy paper Friday that said some 99 percent of its food exports have long met US, European Union and Japanese standards.

The paper also announced that China is implementing a standardized monitoring and recall system, and enhance inspections and stricter penalties for violators.

Vice Premier Wu Yi would chair a working group on food safety and product quality as the government tries to salvage its reputation after a series of products were rejected by the US due to safety problems.

Chinese delegations are slated to visit Washington later this month and in September to discuss food and product safety.
