TO PRESENT FISH RESEARCH RESULTS 

Lallemand Animal Nutrition at AQUA 2018

 

Lallemand Animal Nutrition is looking forward to welcoming the world aquaculture industry to France at AQUA 2018 trade show and conference on Aug. 25-29 in Montpellier, France. Lallemand's aquaculture team will exhibit at booth #74-75 and will share new results on fish immunity and antioxidant defenses during poster sessions and presentations.

 

Lallemand Animal Nutrition, which is an industry sponsor of AQUA 18, will present its R&D director, Dr. Mathieu Castex, on Sunday, Aug. 26, who will talk on reinforcing mucosal immunity in salmonids through feeding yeast derivatives and probiotics, and the development of a new DNA-based technique.

 

On the same day, Nicola Pontefract, a Ph.D. candidate at Plymouth University in the UK, will share findings on two salmon trials performed in collaboration with BioMar in Scotland.

FIRST COMPANY FROM ASIA

INVE Aquaculture granted direct-import certificate by Ecuador

 

INVE Thailand, part of Benchmark Holdings, has become the first company in Asia to be awarded a certificate to export its Artemia cysts, feed and health products into Ecuador. It will now be used as a reference in the region for other companies seeking similar certificates.

 

The announcement came after three full days of audits by COTERI (Technical Commission for Import Risk, Ecuador) at the company's factory in Thailand.

 

The certificate, which is valid for four years, was presented by Ecuadorian Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Ana Katuska Drouet and Aquaculture and Fisheries Sub-Secretary Daniel Carofilis during a ceremony at INVE's office in Bangkok.

 

Minister Drouet commented on the high standard of operations at the factory, which will now be used as a benchmark for other companies applying for a similar certificate in the future.

 

Addressing his team after the ceremony, Philippe Léger, CEO of Benchmark's INVE said:

"We are proud of the dedication of our management team and staff in Thailand. This is not only a milestone achievement for INVE and Benchmark, but also the next step towards a more efficient supply chain and enhanced service for our customers in Ecuador.

BOOSTING FISH SURVIVAL RATE

Blutech launches LoRa smart aquaculture solution

 

Taiwan-based IIoT (industrial internet of things) specialist Blutech introduces the world's first commercialised IIoT service platform integrated with its LoRa LPWAN system to work out a smart aquaculture monitoring solution to help fish farmers boost fish survival rates.

 

Blutech's CEO, WF Chen, shared, "Our company has helped farmers set up the first smart fishing farm in southern Taiwan with a space of up to 13 hectares with the LoRa LPWAN (low-power wide-area network) system, which shows a 99.9% accuracy in data transmission following months of non-stop trial operation, significantly helping aquaculture operators reduce unnecessary losses." LoRa Technology is the DNA of IoT, connecting sensors to the Cloud and enabling real-time communication of data and analytics that can be utilized to enhance efficiency and productivity.

 

The system allows users to keep track of fishing farm data via smartphones, reducing significant manpower management and power consumption costs, and waterwheel malfunction rates.

 

"Of course, big data analysis is also needed to provide smart analysis to better improve aquaculture operations", Chen added.

 

Due to the lack of data related to weather, bacteria and power supply interruption, fishing farmers usually have very little knowledge of when and what type of fishes to raise.

 

Monitoring requirements vary according to the different fishes for farming. Hence, monitoring methods must be constantly adjusted to suit the requirements. "All data concerning water, power, air, temperature and vibration must be monitored", Chen explained.

 

Other sectors including horticulture and livestock farming also require the support of IoT, big-data analysis and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help enhance production efficiency. Chen indicated that AIoT (combination of AI and IoT) is another crucial application sector that is in need of great development efforts.

 

In 2016, research showed that global smart aquaculture market scale reached US$500 million. It is expected to have a CAGR of 160% in the coming years and to reach US$1.2 billion by 2022.

 


 
 

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

Skretting empowers small-scale tilapia farmers in Zambia

 

Skretting continues its support for aquaculture growth in Africa, with its latest community development project underway in Zambia, which is set to improve the livelihoods of tilapia farmers.

 

This latest project is located in the Mpulungu region in northern Zambia. Forty five farmers are participating in the project, of which 44% are women. This project was initiated in 2017 and officially launched in late July this year.

 

"For a long time, farmers in Zambia have had the challenge of getting good quality fingerlings and good quality feed for farmers," says Jurre Zaal, general manager Skretting Zambia.

 

"Skretting is happy to fill that gap and provide farmers with the Skretting feed and services that they need through initiatives like this community development project."

 

The community development project aims to create shared value—both economic value and value for society by addressing its needs and challenges.

 

The latest community development project will help local Zambian small-scale farmers increase their income by sustainably producing tilapia. "Quality feed, quality fingerlings and technical service will accelerate fish farming projects in the province and address some of the major challenges for fish farmers," said Ramans Kayumu, Provincial Fisheries Officer from the Zambian Ministry of Fisheries at the launch event.

 

The launch attendees included representatives from the Zambian Ministry of Fisheries, the Misanfu Research Institute and WorldFish, as well as farmers.

 

Farmers will be preparing their ponds throughout August to be ready to stock fingerlings in September.
