First ASF outbreak Hits Da Nang, Vietnam

At least five swine have died, and samples from the meat have tested positive for African swine fever (ASF) at farms in the Hoa Ninh and Hoa Phong communes of Da Nang's Hoa Vang district, Vietnam, Vietnam News reported.

Phan Duy Anh, Vice Chairman of the district, reported that 10 out of 36 swine at a farm in Hoa Ninh Commune showed signs of illness, including subcutaneous bleeding and loss of appetite, in late July. Two of the swine died on July 30, 2024, and ASF was detected in samples from the carcasses.

In early August, three additional swine in the villages of Hoa Phong Commune died between August 5 and 8. ASF was confirmed in the meat samples taken from these swine as well.

In response, the district has culled and buried 40 swine following strict regulations issued by Vietnam's Ministry of Health and the central veterinary department to combat the epidemic.

Authorities have isolated the affected communes and imposed a ban on all swine slaughter and transportation of swine in and out of the area to prevent further spread of the virus.

To contain the outbreak, over 2,000 litres of chemicals have been used to sterilise swine farms across 11 communes in the district.
