BioMar's new production facility in Australia gets final approval

BioMar Group's AUD56 million (US$40.7 million) investment in a new aquaculture feed production facility in Tasmania, Australia, has received the final approval from the local Latrobe Council.

With the approval, a 14-month construction phase could proceed.

In December 2017, BioMar announced plans to develop a world-class state of the art aquaculture feed production facility in Tasmania, in response to the growth seen in the sector.

BioMar Australia's technical customer account manager Alasdair Bradley said he was delighted to receive the Latrobe Council's DA approval, which allows the project to move forward.

"As part of the DA approval process, the Environment Protection Authority approved the Development Proposal and Environmental Management Plan, ensuring BioMar's production facility meets all required environmental responsibilities and practices," Bradley said.

The site once housed a particle board manufacturing mill. Redundant facilities at the site have been dismantled, paving the way for work to start on the new production building.

"Now that we have all the final approvals, we look forward to getting construction underway and soon, we will be producing locally made, high-performance aquaculture feed not only for the Australian market but for New Zealand and in the near future, other export markets", said Carlos Diaz, CEO of BioMar Group.
