Hungary wheat production down, corn crop seen steady

Hungary's wheat production was 3.7 million tonnes in 2010, an on-year decrease of 16%, and the corn crop is estimated to reach 7.4 million tonnes, about the same amount as in 2009, according to the Ministry of Rural Development.

Wheat has been harvested on about 99% of its sowing area.

The wheat harvest is down 21% from the average of the past five years and the corn crop will be in line with the average of the same period.

Hungary's crops have been hit by adverse weather, including floods earlier this year. The reduced crop reflects decisions by farmers to plant less wheat for this harvest than previously.
