Blood tests underway in Negros Oriental, Philippines amid ASF concerns

Authorities in Negros Oriental, Philippines, are conducting blood tests on swine in towns and cities in the province following a recent outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), Philippine News Agency reported.
Alejandro Rafal, head of the Department of Agriculture-Provincial Agriculture Technology Coordinating Office, said that his office had received reports of potential ASF cases.
"Confirmatory tests have to be done to ascertain if there is ASF resurgence outside of Valencia," Rafal stated.
As of August 9, 2024, the Provincial Veterinary Office reported no new ASF cases in Valencia after nearly 200 swine were culled in Barangay West Balabag as part of containment efforts.
Rafal emphasised the need for strengthened biosecurity measures across the region's towns and cities to prevent the further spread of ASF. He attributed the resurgence of cases to a lack of consistent monitoring and regular blood testing of hogs.
Additionally, the movement of swine and pork between areas without proper certification from local government units was identified as a contributing factor to the spread of ASF. Rafal urged swine raisers to cease the practice of swill feeding to mitigate the risk of transmission.
