Brazil's begins exporting beef and pork to the Dominican Republic
Brazil has begun exporting beef and pork to the Dominican Republic, a noteworthy milestone given the Dominican Republic is the second-largest market in Central America and the Caribbean, boasting an annual demand of approximately 120,000 tonnes of meat, Dominican Today reported.
Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock released a comprehensive statement elaborating on the dedicated efforts that paved the way for the Dominican government's decision to welcome Brazilian beef and pork. The journey encompassed exhaustive negotiations and meticulous assessments of certifications and inspection procedures at exporting facilities.
The spotlight on the Dominican Republic as a promising destination for Brazilian meats is underpinned by its position as the second-largest economy in Central America and the Caribbean. Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Favaro, underlined the monumental significance of this achievement, stressing its role as a pivotal advancement for Brazilian pork access over the past decade.
Minister Favaro attributed the swift progress in negotiations to a pivotal meeting held in March between himself and the Dominican Republic's ambassador in Brasilia, Patricia Villegas de Jorge. The outcome of these deliberations culminated in the opening of the market this week.
Brazil has already given the green light to seven of its establishments for meat exports to the Dominican Republic, while assessments of requests from other companies are currently underway.
The ministry's statement also disclosed that since January 2023, coinciding with Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's commencement of his third presidential term, Brazil has magnified its agricultural product reach to 29 markets across the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
Official forecasts point to Brazil poised to achieve a record meat production of 26.6 million tonnes this year, spanning beef, pork, and chicken. Notably, a substantial share of this production, approximately 9.3 million tonnes, is earmarked for exports.
On the global stage, Brazil ranks second in beef production, trailing the US, secures the third spot in chicken meat production, following the US and China, and clinches the fourth position in pork production. As an exporter, Brazil assumes a leading role in shipping beef and chicken, standing fourth as a pork supplier.
Projections amplify Brazil's beef production by 4.5% this year, reaching 9.06 million tonnes. However, a slight dip is expected in beef exports, projected to decrease by 3.3%, amounting to 2.91 million tonnes.
Meanwhile for pork, forecasts forecast a 2.7% upswing in production, marking a record 5.32 million tons for the year. Furthermore, pork exports are predicted to experience a robust surge of 10.1%, reaching a substantial 1.22 million tonnes.
