African swine fever confirmed in Bohol province, Philippines

The provincial veterinary office of Bohol province, Philippines has officially confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF) after detecting the virus in dead swine within Pilar town, losing its status as the only province in the only Central Visayas region that is free from the disease, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

Dr. Stella Marie Lapis, the provincial veterinarian, confirmed on Tuesday that ASF was identified in deceased swine located in the backyards of Purok 6 in Barangay San Vicente, Pilar.

The confirmation of ASF has prompted Bohol Governor Aris Aumentado to issue an executive order on July 28 imposing a ban on the movement of swine, as well as fresh and frozen pork products, into or out of the province.

Taking immediate action, Pilar Mayor Wilson Pajo said that the local government has established checkpoints in critical areas, including San Vicente and neighbouring villages like San Carlos, Catagdaan, and Inaghuban, to restrict the movement of live swine and pork products.
