Normex secures significant agreement with Mirae Aquafarm

Norway-based aquaculture technology firm Normex has signed a supply contract with South Korea-based Mirae Aquafarm.

Normex provides solutions for disinfection and water treatment to a number of different industries – including fishing and aquaculture. It has provided solutions to closed fish farms at sea, land-based aquaculture operations, and hatcheries across more than 300 installations worldwide – including installations at Hofseth Aqua and Salmon Evolution.

The new contract with Mirae Aquafarm will see Normex install its "Razone" water treatment system on a proposed land-based salmon farm, which according to Mirae will have a farming capacity of 10,000 metric tonnes (MT) of salmon annually when completed.

"This is a strategic milestone for us. It confirms the international relevance of our technology," Normex CEO Stig Ove Johansen said.

According to Normex, Razone is a water treatment system that the company developed for use in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) aquaculture facilities. The company claims its system "removes microparticles, reduces biological load, and ensures consistent water clarity," which all benefit fish health and lower mortality rates.

"The market is looking for solutions that combine sustainability, biosecurity, and operational efficiency. Razone directly meets these demands," Johansen said. "On top of that, the system can be remotely monitored, giving us a strong platform for further international growth."

Normex said its new contract is a direct result of it participating in Innovation Norway's Global Growth program. The program has worked to boost business for the country's seafood exporters and technology companies for over a decade, and Normex said it helped the company with valuable market insights and access to "key decision-makers in the region."

To that end, Normex also entered a partnership with Korean company Aquapro, which also produces and supplies water purification products.

"With Aquapro on board, we're strengthening our presence in Southeast Asia. We've already launched new projects together and see significant potential for further expansion in the region," Johansen said.

Mirae Aquafarm CEO Suhyung Cho said the company spent "considerable time" finding the right partners before choosing Normex.

The announcement makes Normex the second Norwegian aquaculture technology firm to gain a contract with Mirae Aquafarm in less than a year. In December 2024, Mirae announced a partnership with Laksesystemer for AI and automated feed systems for its land-based salmon farm.
