Hungary's 2008 grain harvest soars by 54 percent on-year

Hungary harvested 8.6 million tonnes of grain in 2008, of which autumn wheat accounted for more than 5.6 million tonnes, said Agriculture Ministry spokesman Andras Dekany.

Central Statistics Office data indicates that last year, Hungary harvested 5.6 million tonnes of grain, state news agency MTI said.

Of the 5.6 million tonnes of this year's autumn wheat, more than 60 percent was of milling quality and the average yield was more than five tonnes a hectare, the highest since 2004, Dekany said.

The ministry will publish detailed harvest data at 0930 GMT Thursday (August 14).
