Most pork in Finland thought to be raised on GM feed
The majority of pork imported to Finland is likely to have been fed genetically modified (GM) soy.
YLE Radio News, the country's radio station reported that most pork consumed in the country is probably raised on GM pig feed.
The station reported comments from Pasi Lähdetie, director of the Finnish Food and Drink Industries' Federation that consumers have no way of knowing what the pigs were fed on as GM labeling is not required. It would be likely that the majority of the animals were GM fed.
Even though EU laws require GM products be labeled as such, they do not require labeling for meat from animals fed on such products.
Should Finland begin labeling of such meats, domestic and imported meats would be placed in very unequal positions, Lahdetie added.
