Turkey boosts wheat imports from Russia before suspending foreign purchases
Before suspending wheat imports from abroad, Turkey significantly increased its purchases from Russia, reaching a maximum of US$140.3 million since January this year, Azernews reported.
The Turkish authorities decided to suspend wheat imports from June 21 to October 15, 2024. This move is part of a strategy to protect local producers from suffering due to lower grain prices.
In June, Russia increased its wheat exports to Turkey by 11%, amounting to US$140.3 million. The only month with higher imports this year was January, at US$145.7 million.
As summer began, Russia was the sole major supplier of wheat to Turkey. Imports from Ukraine, traditionally the second-largest exporter to Turkey, dropped eightfold to US$2.1 million.
Overall, Turkey slightly reduced its wheat imports in June by 0.8%, down to US$143.8 million.
