Cambodia supplies fish breeds to local farmers to drive aquaculture development

Cambodia's Agriculture Ministry seeks to stimulate local aquaculture developments by providing fish as well as frog breeds to farmers in the Nitean commune, Borseth district of Kampong Speu province, Khmer Times reported.

The ministry also instructed authorities to continue their efforts in aiding farmers to develop aquaculture in the region.

The government's support will benefit 38 families that raise catfish, who are expected to receive 700 young fish, four bags of fish food and one tent.

Agriculture Minister Veng Sakhon said on August 9 that following Prime Minister Hun Sen's instructions on February 18 and July 14, he is committed to supporting food production in Cambodia.

"The government has provided a $500,000 fund to increase food production by expanding fish and frog farming activities and planting crops which will in turn create jobs, generate income and ensure food security amid the pandemic," he said.

Sakhon pledged to boost food production, maintain and sustain the family economy, maintain food security by increasing productivity in the agriculture sector and turn the crisis into opportunities to expand and strengthen breeding capacity in all forms.

"The fisheries administration officials must continue to provide additional training on breeding techniques, hatching techniques, feed mixing, care and efficiency while increasing activities to distribute fish, frogs and tents to families who want to expand their businesses or who want to start aquaculture," he added.

Chheang Tola, provincial department of agriculture director, said Kampong Speu has 11 reservoirs with 216 farming families.

"The department of agriculture has always trained the farmers in the raising of fish, frogs and lobsters," he said.
