BRF reports 1,138 COVID-19 cases in one Parana state meat plant

Brazilian based BRF SA Toledo, Parana state plant reported 1,138 COVID-19 cases, making up 29% of all cases in the state and highlighting the issues around meat plant outbreaks, Reuters reported.

Parana health authorities confirmed to Reuters that BRF's meat plant in Toledo reported 1,138 COVID-19 cases and five COVID-19 cases in another BRF meat plant Carambei, bringing the total COVID-19 cases in meat plants in the state to 3,979 through July 24.

The authorities said cases continue to rise even though companies have presented COVID-19 contingency plans to remain in operation.

BRF said in response to Reuters that none of its workers in its Toledo and Carambei facilities have tested positive for COVID-19, adding that it had conducted 11,000 tests at Toledo. It said operations at both meat plants continue as normal.

BRF is the biggest exporter of chicken in the world.

Parana health authorities' data showed a GT Foods plant in Paranavai was the first to report a COVID-19 positive case. There are now 137 positive cases and five deaths in that factory. No deaths were reported in other meat plants in Parana.

The data also showed the biggest global meatpacker JBS SA reporting 88 cases in four of its meat plants in Parana, with 57 confirmed cases in its Santo Inacio plant. JBS has 11,000 workers in Parana state.
