Advancing aquaculture: Gut health for sustainability and climate resilience

Aquaculture is essential to global food production, human nutrition, and poverty alleviation, making it one of the most promising sectors for meeting the world's growing food demand. Recognising this potential, stakeholders and international organisations are actively working to strengthen aquatic animal health as a cornerstone of sustainable aquaculture. Disease prevention remains a top priority, as outbreaks can lead to severe economic losses and disrupt vital food supply chains. By enhancing aquaculture welfare, fish farmers can reduce reliance on harmful, chemicalbased treatments, leading to improved fish growth, higher survival rates, and better overall product quality. Additionally, better management of aquaculture can help protect fish from the threats posed by climate change.

Angel Yeast and Alltech lead innovation in aquaculture production while adapting to the industry's continuous evolution and protecting fish from the adverse effects of climate change. The use of glutathione which is also identified as a beauty product is a groundbreaking strategy by Angel Yeast (p. 8-9) for addressing stress in that can lead to metabolic disorders, reduced disease resistance, and increased disease outbreaks in aquatic animals. It also reduces the level of oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and toxic substances in the fish's liver. As most diseases start in the gut, glutathione also promotes the process of liver detoxification by effectively converting toxic substances and excreting them from the fish's body. It also helps maintain the intestinal mucosa to prevent harmful substances and microorganisms from entering the bloodstream. Moreover, it promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines to improve immunity and digestion of the aquatic species, thereby reducing the occurrence of diseases.

Prioritising gut health is also a key focus of Alltech (p. 10-11). As farmed fish tend to be at greater risk for diseases than their terrestrial counterparts due to the vulnerability of its environment to harmful microorganisms, Alltech's gut health solutions effectively protect and improves gut health, which is crucial in the animal's optimal performance, overall health and immunity. One of the gut's important functions is maintaining a healthy digestive system, as the digestive tract is responsible for breaking down food and absorbing essential nutrients. It also serves as a first line of defence against diseases. Alltech's prebiotic solutions have been proven to significantly enhance the gut structures of aquaculture species, leading to increased growth rates, improved feed conversion ratios, and reduced mortality rates.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), aquatic animals are crucial to our global food supply, currently contributing 17% of all animal products and 7% of the total protein consumed worldwide. With seafood demand set to surge by 32% by 2030, the significance of aquaculture cannot be overstated. Therefore, it is essential to prioritise its health and protect it from the severe impacts of climate change, as its role in ensuring global food security and meeting rising nutritional demands is more critical now than ever.
