Various non-tariff barriers on seafood imports in overseas markets have posed challenges for Vietnam's seafood exporters.
Europe is testing the certification of reported and controlled wild-caught fish under the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT).
The US is applying a Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA) under Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards (SPS), TBT and Farm Bill under SPS. In addition, the country continues anti-dumping lawsuits against Vietnamese pangasius. Apart from major markets, some regional countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, are also putting anti-dumping pressures on seafood imported by the countries.
The barriers reportedly caused significant losses to Vietnam's seafood exporters as well as the fisheries industry.
