High tariffs, US trade deals, and potential impact on agri markets in Indonesia and Vietnam

The United States' move to reorder world trade continues US President Donald Trump's deglobalisationist agenda, which could dramatically reshape agricultural trade in Southeast Asia, mostly in favour of the US.

Each country will have to contend with its own challenges as trade deals (signed usually to avoid hefty US tariffs) will now open their markets to a huge influx of US agricultural products. This will potentially have a significant impact on production, prices, and the profitability of local producers.

Indonesia

According to its Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan), Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency and surplus production of chicken meat and eggs, the ministry stated in mid-July. Meanwhile, the country is preparing to give broiler chicken production a big push from August onward.

However, the abundance of local chicken meat supply has also caused the local price of white feather commercial broilers to drop (albeit at a very gentle pace) from US$1.17/kg in the week of June 6 to US$1.04/kg in the week of July 18.

EFL notes in its latest statement: "(Prices) for white feather broilers in West Java dropped by approximately 5.6% over the past week (of July 18), falling from Rp18,000/kg (US$1.10) to Rp17,000/kg (US$1.04). This decline reflects weak consumer demand and an oversupplied market".
