Peruvian aquaculture exports increase 39%
During the first half of this year, Peru exported aquaculture products worth US$142 million, up 39% over the same period in 2009, when this figure was US$102 million.
As indicated by the Extractive Industries Management of the Exporters Association of Peru (Adex), 'other molluscs and aquatic invertebrates' exports raked in sales of US$55.4 million. This figure is 66.7% higher than that recorded between January and June last year, which was US$33 million.
Second highest was 'scallops, frozen, dried, salted or in brine' exports, growing by 67%, with shipments of US$35 million.
Meanwhile, in the first half of 2010 the category of 'uncooked shrimp tails in water or steam' recorded a drop of 4% compared to the same period in 2009, with a value of US$24 million.
The main buyer of the item 'other molluscs and aquatic invertebrates' was China, which increased its demand by 115% to US$40.9 million.
In addition to the Chinese market, which accounted for 74% of total shipments, these products were destined to South Korea, US, Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy and Taiwan, among other destinations; while scallop products were exported to France (US$19 million), Netherlands, US, Belgium, Italy, Spain, UK, Chile, Portugal and Canada, among others.
Frozen shrimp products were sent to the US (US$22.6 million), Spain (US$625,000), Ecuador, Belgium, Lithuania and Russia.
