South Korea bans UK pork imports on foot-and-mouth disease

The South Korean government said Monday (Aug 6) that it banned the import of British pork and pigs following London's confirmation of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak at a cattle farm, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said all quarantine inspections of British pork have been suspended until further notice.

"Currently, there are no shipments being held for quarantine inspections, but if any further ones arrive, they will be sent back or destroyed," said Kim Chang Seob, the ministry's chief veterinary officer.

So far this year, 64 live pigs and 804 tonnes of pork have been imported from Britain, equivalent to 0.5 percent of total imports in South Korea.
