Andhra Pradesh, India shrimp farmers blamed losses on poor seed quality from supplying hatcheries

At a recent meeting, shrimp farmers in Andhra Pradesh, India, alleged that they faced severe losses in the last three years due to poor quality of seeds from Vyshnavi Hatcheries in Gudur and Munnangi Hatcheries in Nellore.

Following a series of complaints from the members of Prakasam District Prawn Farmers Association (PDPFA), Prakasam District Collector A. Thameem Ansaria conducted the review meeting on Monodon shrimp growth in Ongole on August 1. Andhra Pradesh Fisheries Commissioner Tammu Dola Sankar, PDPFA president D. Gopinath, farmers and personnel from hatchery managements also participated in the event.

According to affected shrimp farmers, shrimp production declined drastically during the past three years. They also demanded compensation from the management of their supplying hatcheries.

Prakasam District Fisheries Department officials have already collected seed samples and sent them to the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in Hyderabad for seed quality (gene sequence) testing.

Ansaria informed the shrimp farmers that the report from the NFDB will be sent to the government of Andhra Pradesh and necessary actions will be taken.
