Environmental group slams Malaysian shrimp farm assessment

The Global Environment Centre (GEC) has slammed the environmental impact assessment report on the proposed 1,000-hectare shrimp farm project in Terengganu, saying that it missed out important facts.

The Department of Environment should review the assessment report, said GEC director Faisal Parish.

The report on the project, known as the Integrated Shrimp Aquaculture Park located in Penarik, failed to mention a major environmental impact caused by the pumping of sea water into the river, said Faisal.

Sea water would have to be pumped into the breeding ponds, and discharging the sea water into the Setiu river would affect the river's salinity and ecological system, he said.

The 1,000-hectare site is also rich with 18 types of endangered species, and is a breeding ground for terrapins and freshwater crocodiles, the latter of which is especially rare in Malaysia, Faisal said.
