Indonesia sees chicken egg, meat prices moving towards new price balance

Indonesia's National Food Agency (NFA) has assessed fluctuations in the prices of chicken eggs and chicken meat to be progressing towards a new price balance.

The head of the NFA, Arief Prasetyo, said the increase in prices of the two commodities was an unavoidable dynamic due to the rising cost of production.

He explained that the increase in the prices of eggs and broiler chickens were inseparable from the cost structure that established prices at the downstream level.

Arief also said that the Indonesian government would not be importing corn feed as local farmers may intend to grow more corn.

Currently, the NFA has a policy that aims to overcome the disparity of production and selling prices of chickens in the market. According to Arief, chicken farmers and laying hens had suffered heavy losses in January due to production costs.

According to the National Food Agency's food price panel, in the July 24-31 period, the national average price of chicken meat (at the producer level) reaches Rp22,600 per kilogram, Race chicken eggs rose 0.08 percent to an average of Rp.26,570 per kilogram, and dry corn droppings fell 0.21 percent to Rp.4,820 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, in the July 24-31 period, at the consumer level, the prices of chicken meat fell 0.59% to Rp35,690 (US$2.36) per kilogramme. Chicken eggs also dropped 0.23% to Rp30,740 (US$2.03) per kilogramme.

Feed corn rose 0.79% to Rp6,410 (US$0.42) per kilogramme in the period.
