Vietnamese catfish exports to Russia up 10%

Vietnam shipped more than 20,000 tonnes of tra and basa catfish to Russia in the first seven months of 2010, an increase of more than 2,000 tonnes year-on-year.

Duong Ngoc Minh, head of the tra catfish export management board to Russia, said that the average export price was US$1.71 per kilogramme, up 9 cents from the same period last year.

Russia's tightening of quality norms for seafood imports and the onset of the salmon fishing season in September will have negative impacts on the exports, Duong said.  However, the export target of US$100 million set for this year is likely to be achieved.

Seafood export companies would have a chance to promote their products and look for new partners in Eastern Europe when they go for the World Food Moscow 2010 in mid-September, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Luong Le Phuong said.

Meanwhile, following the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, seafood producers have more opportunities to boost exports to the US, but Vietnamese companies have not taken full advantage of the situation.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the US is importing catfish from 11 countries, but the import volume from Vietnam is the largest.
