Indonesia's Waingapu integrated shrimp estate targets 52,000 tonnes annually with Rp7.2 trillion investment

The 2,150-hectare national strategic project in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province is expected to come into operation by 2028, anchored by government infrastructure spending of around US$399 million.

The Indonesian government's Waingapu Integrated Shrimp Farming project in East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, is designed to produce approximately 52,000 metric tonnes of shrimp per year, generating an estimated annual production value of Rp4 trillion (US$221 million), Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said on 31 July 2026.

The project is backed by Rp7.2 trillion (US$399 million) in government development investment covering cultivation ponds, wastewater treatment installations, reservoirs, access roads, irrigation channels, and supporting infrastructure. Hasan said construction of key facilities is being expedited to enable production to begin as soon as possible, with the estate targeted for operation by 2028.

The 2,150-hectare estate is expected to employ around 7,000 workers across the supply chain, spanning feed and seed distribution, shrimp cultivation, and processing. Hasan said recruitment of approximately 3,000 local workers is already underway, with selected candidates to undergo training ahead of operations.

Hasan said the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs is working with relevant agencies to fulfil regulatory requirements and clear operational obstacles. He described the project as a tool to boost national shrimp production, strengthen the fisheries industry, and improve market access for Indonesian shrimp in international markets.
