Bovaer feed supplement celebrates milestone: 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 saved in methane reduction

Feed supplement Bovaer, developed by DSM-Firmenich, has achieved a significant milestone in its mission to reduce enteric methane emissions from cattle, with the reduction of 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions and counting, Beef Magazine reported.

By targeting the enzymes responsible for methane production in a cow's rumen, this additive has proven its efficacy. Adding just a quarter teaspoon of Bovaer per cow per day has resulted in a remarkable 30% reduction in methane emissions from dairy cattle and a 45% reduction from beef cattle.

The collaboration between DSM-Firmenich and global partners is pivotal in introducing Bovaer to various markets and value chains through well-structured on-farm trials and pilots.

With successful large-scale pilots in May 2023, the Bel Group, a renowned French cheese producer, has decided to roll out Bovaer to all 10,000 cattle that supply milk in Slovakia. This strategic move is expected to curtail methane emissions by a quarter on each farm, resulting in a substantial annual reduction of 400 tons of methane.

Looking ahead, DSM-Firmenich is targeting its next milestone: achieving a 100,000 metric tonne reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions. This ambitious goal reflects the company's unwavering commitment to advancing net-zero protein production.

Notably, Bovaer is authorized for sale in over 45 countries, including the EU/EEA, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Pakistan, Switzerland, and Turkey (as of June 2023).
