China encourages foreign investment in livestock breeding and alternative meats
China's state planner the National Development and Reform Commission said it will support foreign investment into breeding of livestock and poultry, and meat substitutes made from plants from this year, Reuters reported.
The move from the country's state planner comes as China aims to increase its meat supplies and alternative proteins as way to supplement pork shortages. China's massive swine herd was decimated by an African swine fever outbreak.
Pig producers in China have boosted foreign breeding swine imports in an effort to rebuild a sow herd.
China has seen major international and local companies, such as Beyond Meat looking to develop and sell plant-based meat alternatives in the country.
