Price Summary

Daily corn import of more than 1,000 tonnes/day from Cambodia brings corn price down from THB10.30/kg (US$0.331/kg) last week to THB9.80/kg (US$0.315/kg) this week.

Demand of soymeal produced from imported soybean is unchanged for this week and price remained at THB18.15/kg (US$0.583/kg). CBOT soybean price eased with the China Purchasing Manager Index at its lowest in 11 months, coupled with more soybean stock release of 3.0 million tonnes by China importer to local vegetable oil producer.

Low fishmeal supply from the fishing ban at Andaman gulf closing pushed price higher to THB31.80/kg (US$1.02/kg), from THB 30.30/kg (US$0.974/kg) last week.

The government's paddy rice auction programme is the main reason for the easing of prices for all rice by-products.

Market analysis

The Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) supports the "Suranaree Model" in Nakornratchasima province to improve cassava production in the next crop through more natural methods to prevent mealy bugs. Beside more natural method, OAE also recommends crop rotation to prevent meal bugs.

Nakornratchasima, with cassava cultivation area of 711,440 acres, or 25% of the whole country, produces 6,236,613 tonnes/year or 1,408 kg/acre. OAE also recommends to use more cassava in animal feed, ethanol production and other processing such as industrial glue in plywood industry.

OAE has collaborated with the Suranaree Technology University to establish the "Suranaree Cassava Institute" in June 2013. The objective is to transfer the research process and technology for production improvement from downstream to upstream for value creation, together with soil and fertiliser management for improved efficiency of future crops.

The Suranaree Model is meant to be the prototype to other cassava farmers in other areas and improve the country's cassava production in the next crop.
